Rooted in Community. Driven by Opportunity.

Amsha Africa Foundation was founded on a simple belief: that lasting change happens when communities lead their own solutions. We work alongside local leaders, organizations, and changemakers to identify needs, build capacity, and co-create solutions that are sustainable, scalable, and owned by the people we serve.

From classrooms to farms, from innovation labs to small businesses, we invest in people and possibilities. Our approach is community-led, partnership-driven, and focused on long-term impact — not short-term charity.

Today, Amsha Africa Foundation is proud to support initiatives across Africa that empower youth, uplift artisans, strengthen communities, and build a brighter, more sustainable future for generations to come.

Field & Project Teams

Behind every successful AAF initiative is a dedicated network of field staff, project coordinators, community leaders, technical advisors, volunteers, and partner organizations working directly within the communities we serve.

Our teams support a diverse portfolio of programs across education, digital inclusion, sustainable agriculture, health, economic empowerment, and community development. Some initiatives are short-term and seasonal, while others span multiple years and require ongoing collaboration with local stakeholders and implementation partners.

We believe lasting change happens when communities are empowered to lead their own development. That is why our field teams work alongside local organizations, schools, farmers, entrepreneurs, and community leaders to deliver practical, sustainable solutions that create long-term impact.

Their dedication, expertise, and commitment are essential to advancing AAF’s mission of expanding opportunity and strengthening communities across Africa and the Global South.

Our Story

Rooted in Community. Driven by Opportunity.

Our Story

Every organization has a beginning.

Ours began with a question.

What responsibility do those of us with opportunity have to help create opportunity for others?

In late 2007, Kenya experienced one of the most difficult periods in its modern history. Following a disputed national election, violence erupted across several regions of the country, leaving communities divided, families displaced, businesses destroyed, and lives forever changed.

During this time, AAF Founder and Executive Director Tony Abuta was visiting Kisumu, one of the areas most heavily impacted by the unrest.

What he witnessed would shape the course of his life.

He saw innocent people caught in circumstances beyond their control.

He saw fear, uncertainty, and loss.

He saw hardworking families struggling to rebuild.

He saw young people eager for opportunity but lacking access to the education, resources, and support needed to move forward.

He saw communities trying to recover from a crisis they did not create.

As someone who had spent years building a career in the United States while maintaining deep roots in Kenya, Tony was profoundly affected by what he experienced.

The violence eventually subsided, but the questions remained.

Why were so many people trapped in cycles of poverty despite their talent and determination?

Why were young people unable to access opportunities that could change the trajectory of their lives?

Why were communities repeatedly vulnerable to instability, economic hardship, and poor leadership?

And perhaps most importantly:

What could one person do to make a difference?

Rather than looking away, Tony chose to act.

In 2008, he founded Amsha Africa Foundation with a vision of helping communities create sustainable pathways to prosperity through education, economic opportunity, technology access, and community development.

The goal was never simply to provide aid.

The goal was to empower people to build their own futures.

The vision was to create a practical, repeatable model that could strengthen communities across Kenya, throughout Africa, and ultimately across the Global South.

“We only have a finite amount of time on this earth. If we have the ability to create opportunity for others, we have a responsibility to try.”

— Tony Abuta, Founder & Executive Director

Built on Commitment, Not Convenience

AAF was not built through large grants or institutional funding.

For much of its history, the organization was sustained through the dedication of its founder, family members, volunteers, and a small but committed group of supporters who believed in the mission.

Year after year, despite limited resources, AAF continued investing in people, communities, and opportunity.

Not because it was easy.

But because the need was real.

That same commitment continues to guide our work today.

What Makes AAF Different

Many organizations provide assistance.

We focus on empowerment.

Our approach is rooted in a simple philosophy:

Teach. Equip. Empower. Sustain.

We work alongside registered community organizations, schools, cooperatives, local leaders, entrepreneurs, and grassroots partners to develop practical solutions that create long-term impact.

Whether we are helping students gain access to technology, supporting digital skills training, strengthening food security through climate-smart agriculture, improving access to clean water, or helping entrepreneurs build sustainable livelihoods, our goal remains the same:

To create opportunities that continue generating value long after a project is completed.

Because lasting change happens when communities are active participants in their own success.

Policies & Financial Practices

Revenue Recognition

AAF records donations, contributions, and other sources of revenue in accordance with generally accepted nonprofit accounting principles.

Contributions are recognized when received or pledged, and other revenue is recognized when earned or when the organization has established the right to receive payment.

Classification of Expenses

AAF is committed to transparent and accurate financial reporting. Expenses are categorized based on how they support the organization’s programs, operations, and fundraising activities.

Costs that directly support a specific project or program are assigned to that activity. Shared expenses are allocated using established accounting practices and reasonable allocation methods to ensure that financial reports accurately reflect how resources are used to advance the mission.

Sources of Funding

Since its founding in 2008, Amsha Africa Foundation has been sustained primarily through the generosity of individual donors, volunteers, and supporters who believe in creating opportunities for underserved communities.

For much of its history, AAF’s programs have been funded through private charitable contributions, in-kind donations, community fundraising efforts, and significant personal investments from the organization’s founder and supporters.

In addition to financial contributions, AAF benefits from donated technology, equipment, professional services, volunteer expertise, and strategic partnerships.

Staff Compensation & Volunteer Leadership

Amsha Africa Foundation operates with a lean and mission-focused organizational structure designed to maximize the impact of donor contributions.

When projects require dedicated implementation support, AAF engages local field coordinators, project managers, technical specialists, and other personnel to help deliver programs effectively and ensure accountability at the community level.

Many members of AAF’s leadership team, Board of Directors, and senior advisors contribute significant time, expertise, and professional services on a voluntary basis in support of the organization’s mission.
